Jean Seberg: Defying Stereotypes

Jean Seberg is an icon for many reasons. One reason is that she defied the stereotypes that come with being a small-town Iowa girl and a Hollywood actress. She was sincere, which plays into the small-town Iowa girl stereotype, but on the other hand, she always stood up for herself, was very independent, and was able to move to a different country all by herself. She cared about all people, and she tried to help different minority groups the best she could. Most of the time this was by giving them money to keep their organizations running. By doing this, she was stepping out of bounds to go against what she was "supposed to be doing". Going more toward the Hollywood stereotype, she was already from a small town which was unusual for stars. Then she moved to France because she didn't want to be a Hollywood star, she wanted to work with independent filmmakers. In addition, Jean started to direct and create films which was very unusual for women at that time. Overall, challenged those stereotypes and paved the way for other women to do the same.

  1. Thanks for linking the film's webpage and for including this beautiful photo of Jean Seberg, she was an extraordinary lady. The film that you viewed isn't named and the director's aren't referenced at all, and I was hoping that some evidence from participants or filmmakers could be referenced here, however you make a great case for Jean going against the grain. What about her activism by donating to the Black Panther Party which ultimately led to her death, likely by suicide? There so many things to say about her, all relating back to the documentary film that this blog page is based off of.
