Thomas Edison's Contributions to Film History
I think Thomas Edison contributed so much to the history of film. He invented the kinetoscope which was a huge move in the right direction for films. After the kinetoscope was invented, he created kinetoscope parlours, one of which was named Black Maria Studio. These parlours gave people a space to escape their everyday lives, and only one person could view these films at a time. Later nickelodeons were invented, and Thomas Edison's films could be viewed on a big screen.
His films were essential to the way films and movies progressed. Edison created the first onscreen kiss, censorship, and sequel model. Since then, many people have used these ideas to create their own films, and they are still used in movies today. I think that all of these factors make him a special person in film history. Who knows where the film industry would be today without his influence.
Indeed Edison is suuuuper important to American film history, he made so many advancements forward at the time! The Black Maria studio is where he shot his films, and Kinetascope parlors are where you could go to watch his films, but you correctly identify his nickelodeon model that went onto change public viewing forever. What about The Trust? His model for control of the industry was later copied by individual studios, when vertical integration and block booking were still legal, perhaps discussing his control of patents and partnering with Eastman and others could widen the discussion a bit. Thanks for posting!
