Some Like It Hot Film Review
The film Some Like It Hot was made in 1959 but took place in 1929. In the 1950s there was large economic growth and I think it really shows in this film. The acting and actual film footage of this is really impressive, so there must have been more money going into the film industry as well. For example, Some Like It Hot starred Marilyn Monroe who was, and still is, a big-name actress in film.
On a different note, there were a lot of women in this film. The whole movie was based around an all-woman band. I think it is very important to point out that other countries didn’t have a lot or any, women in front of the camera. And also the fact that two men were dressing and acting as though they were women was probably unheard of. However, there was one point in the movie where one of the men dressing as a woman was hit on by another man. Instead of saying that men should stop doing this, he just said that he can’t wait to be on the other side of the stick again. I’m not sure if this would slide now, but I think it’s interesting to see how women and men were being portrayed at that time.
Overall, this film was very interesting, and I enjoyed having the chance to watch it.
It's a fun film that does transcend the time period it was made, since 'cross dressing' was not considered normal then and LGBTQ+ issues were all still 'in the closet' in American society as a whole. The fact that the film is sympathetic to the gay man character, and that their cross-dressing brings them happiness and success, was way ahead of its time, as you say. Thanks for posting.
